Magazines are stamped on the housing with the respective serial number and spare mags have an additional + in front of the serial number. Walther: 480 serie In 1940 the German army decided to use secret codes on weapons to designate the manufacture. The Germans were afraid that the Allied forces could easily locate the German weapon production sites and bomb them when they knew the manufacturer. In June and July 1940 Walther used the secret code 480. The pistols produced in this period are therefore stamped with 480. The serial number was stamped on the slide.

Up until this point in production, for most guns only the last three digits of the frame serial number of the pistol were scratched on the inside of the slide. These changes first appeared for PPK pistols in the 33x,xxxK serial range, and for the PP pistols in the 22x,xxxP serial range. If we assume that these changes took place for both the PP and PPK at the same time, this reveals that the “spread” I had previously discussed had now increased to 110,000 serial numbers. The next big change was to eliminate the high polished finish on the guns and to instead use what we collectors have come to call a military or milled finish.

Find the gun's serial number. The serial number can be located in any one of several places on the gun, depending on which gun you possess. It may be on the frame of the gun, above the trigger guard or on the grip.

Keep in mind Hoffschmidt's book was written circa 1975, so it will have information that is more dated. Gangarosa's book, which came out in 1999, will have information that is more current.

Are serial numbers researchable. I've read some places that they aren't, but Danny seems quite specific about manufacture time. Another question is that this is referred to as mismatched, or pieced together pistol. What does that mean? Slide and frame have matching serial number, but the frame does not have the 'ac' under the number. Where would this gun have been manufactured? Germany, France,????

My dear vintage pistol collector friends, I am posting this information for John Pearson (longtime Walther and vintage WW II era pistol collector). He no longer is a member of NAPCA and is not on the internet so I told him I would be happy to post this great information for him. In the course of the last number of months I have been visiting and corresponding with Mr. Pearson regarding Walther RSHA SS PP and PPK pistols. With his help (he is the author of the groundbreaking series of articles in “Auto Mag” regarding Walther RSHA SS PP and PPK pistols) I am trying to refine and define the various variations of these interesting pistols and their respective variation characteristics. In the course of those conversations and exchanges many items related to Walther PP and PPK Wartime (WWII era) production procedures and expediencies arose so John decided to produce an article for the vintage collecting community, especially those interested in wartime Walther PP and PPK production relative to serial number sequencing and production priorities as it relates to these pistols.

Very very smooth. I've never seen one without any engraving on it at all, so this would certainly explain why. For a gun being made on the way out it sure is a good gun though.

Another version of the 'Pleitegeirer' shows the eagle over 359. The RZM insignia on the left is found engraved on the slides of early PPK's. It is found on the left hand side of the slide between the Mod PPK and the slide serrations. The NSKKJ (Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps) was the party branch entrusted with transport of party and military supplies.

Keep in mind that Walther had never intentionally produced two guns with the same serial number, and now they needed to create a new serial number range for the Model 8. Their solution was to introduce an alpha suffix to be added to all of their different pistol model serial numbers. They chose the alpha suffix based upon the model of the pistol. Thus for the model 8 it became an A (acht or eight in German), for their Model 9 it became an N (neun for nine in German), and for their Olympia pistols they used the letter O. For the Model PP the suffix became a P, and for the Model PPK the suffix became a K.

See the photograph below. This marking is verification that the new hammer block has been installed and that your pistol is safe to handle. PK380 RECALL Important Safety Recall – OCTOBER 2012 Walther PK380 Pistols Walther has identified a condition that may exist in certain PK380 pistols which may permit a round to be discharged if the trigger is pulled, despite engagement of the manual safety. Walther has found that engagement of the manual safety may not prevent firing of a chambered round when the trigger is pulled. This recall applies to Walther PK380,.380 ACP pistols manufactured by Carl Walther GmbH from May, 2012 to September, 2012, and which have a Serial Number ranging from PK101201 to PK112155 **NOTE: If the serial number begins with WB it is NOT involved in the recall.

Before the plant was captured all records of serial numbers were destroyed. In reality the numbers were based on the PP in 1929 and the PPK in 1931. Most of the prewar numbers on both handguns were in the same proximity with numbers only a few thousand apart. However at the beginning of WW2 there was a bigger demand for the PP and thats when the numbers showed the difference of production for the PPK. Remember the PP held one more round than the PPK also.

Pearson's assumptions, for example, that 'orders came into the factory they were assigned serial numbers, starting with the next one available in sequential order' and 'Walther did not build the guns in a strict serial number sequence; they built guns in a priority sequence'. Are there any references, documents or recorded conversations with Walther employees to support this? Regards Boris Last edited by boris; at 10:33 PM. Since you are documenting the FIRST one, allow me to document the LAST ppk. The article states that the last PPK was in the 431xxxk range.

Serial number on the frame is 242892A. The serial number on the slide is the same without the A suffix. Is the letter at the end of the serial number significant This seems to be a really well made pistol and I am looking forward to shooting it this Saturday. What are your opinions of the PPK, since I am a Walther neophite. Info and feed back on this site is usually very good. I am anxious to get all the info I can on this pistol.

It is found on all Walther PP's and PPK's accepted by the military. Another version of the 'Pleitegeirer' shows the eagle over 359. I suppose all of them were afraid of Neurenberg? Most of these late war pistols are mismatched, meaning the slide number did not match the frame. There are collectors seeking these late war pistols & your's being in such fine condition should fetch 12-15 hundred. Oh yes I forgot, on the spline of the magazine you should see a small W. That signifies soft metal and will be only found on these late war pistols, PPKs included.
